Bring in the Experts: Will your retirement be Super? Retirement Expenditure Guidelines

November 1, 2023 @ 10:00 am - 11:00 am NZDT

The Retirement Expenditure Guidelines were released two weeks ago. While the results are not surprising, they are concerning. The difference between NZ Super and weekly expenditure has increased substantially for all household groups reflecting the higher rate of inflation. Associate Professor Claire Matthews, co-author of the Retirement Expenditure Guidelines provides insights into the findings and guidelines as we wonder what the future looks like for many.

Claire Matthew is the Director, Academic Quality at Massey University since 2014, having joined Massey University in 1996 after 12 years in various roles with Trust Bank. She previously taught banking and financial advice and continues to supervise Masters and PhD students.  Her research interests are consumers’ financial behaviour, decisions and attitudes, with a particular focus on payments, financial capability, retirement planning and KiwiSaver.

As a Research Associate with the Massey Fin-Ed Centre, Claire authors the Centre’s annual Retirement Expenditure Guidelines report and is part of the research team for the Centre’s longitudinal study on financial literacy in New Zealand.
