In this webinar David will unpack what has changed in the Code (and what hasn’t), with a particular focus on the shift in Code Standard 9 from “maintaining” to “continually developing” competence, knowledge, and skill. You’ll explore how this signals a broader cultural move toward lifelong learning, and what that means in practice for advisers and FAPs trying to evidence defensible, relevant CPD.
The webinar will also examine updates to Code Standard 3, reinforcing the link between suitability of advice and informed client consent. You’ll consider how the revised standards empower you to self-determine the level of capability required for different advice scenarios and why, in some cases, meeting the standard may require skills beyond the minimum baseline.
Designed for financial advisers and FAPs who want confidence, consistency, and clarity, this session will help you move away from ad-hoc CPD and toward a more structured, explainable approach that stands up to regulatory, audit, and insurer scrutiny.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this webinar, you will be able to:
- Explain what has changed in the 2025 Code of Conduct, including the practical implications of the revised expectations around competence, knowledge, and skill.
- Identify how your current CPD aligns with the NZCFS Level 5 Version 3 benchmark, and where gaps or risks may exist when demonstrating equivalence.
- Describe what “defendable CPD” looks like in practice, including how to justify learning choices if reviewed by a regulator, auditor, or insurer.
- Apply the updated standards on suitability and informed client consent, recognising when advice scenarios may require capability beyond minimum Code standards.
