Bring in the Experts: An update on the Australian economy and asset markets

Would you like a better understanding of the Australian markets and the the predictions for the future? This a webinar bought to you, so you can obtain a deeper understanding and knowledge of the Australian markets which you can share with your clients.

“The Australian economy has just experienced its first recession in nearly three decades and despite interest rates being cut to zero and the Federal government has just announced its largest peacetime deficit in history, the growth outlook remains subdued. The challenge for the economy is that several of the key drivers of that record-long economic expansion boom have now dissipated, including sharp increases in leverage, population growth, and trade with China, which means our lack of major economic reforms since 2004 may now start to weigh on trend growth. Does this mean that Australia will now be stuck in the slow lane of growth, or can more be done to enhance the outlook?

The challenge for investors in Australian assets is not only subdued growth but also rich asset valuations. So, does this mean that Australia’s sharemarket with its high exposure to traditional cyclical sectors is set to underperform its peers, or will our high dividend yield provide a low-risk income source which investors can use for successful wealth creation?

In this presentation, Matt will discuss his views on the Australian economy and asset markets relative to its peers, and how to build a portfolio in today’s challenging investment terrain which can simultaneously solve sequencing and longevity risk. Matt will also discuss the evolution underway in portfolio construction which can help advisers achieve better risk-controlled outcomes for their clients”

The presenter for this webinar is Matt Sherwood who is Perpetual’s Head of Investment Strategy, Multi Assets. In this role, Matt is responsible for monitoring, analysing and forecasting earnings growth, interest rates, currencies, economic growth and policy implications across major regions.

Matt joined Perpetual Investments in 2005 and his viewpoints and analysis of international developments are frequently sought by policymakers, opinion leaders and investors in Australia and Asia. These include television news networks such as Reuters, CNN and Bloomberg in Asia and Sky News, SBS and the ABC in Australia. His opinions have appeared in many newspapers including the Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, the New York Times and Australian Financial Review.
