Platinum Asset Management 2020 Adviser Presentation
Thursday 29th of October 2020 12:30pm

Current market conditions resemble the great bubbles of market history but amid the froth, many sectors and regions are being left behind, presenting great opportunities. Andrew Clifford, CEO/CIO, and Portfolio Managers, Scott Gilchrist (Platinum Japan Fund) and Nik Dvornak (Platinum European Fund) will present remotely in an interview style presentation.  This will be followed by a Q&A session.

Bios

Julian McCormack, BEco Hons1 (USyd), MAppFin (Macquarie).  Julian joined Platinum in 2001 as an investment analyst, but then left in 2002 to travel the world.  Upon returning he spent eight years working in metals and mining equity research and investment banking at Credit Suisse before founding a company in minerals exploration.  Julian re-joined Platinum in 2014 as an investment specialist and works to help clients stay informed, as well as working with the basic industries analytical team.

Andrew Clifford, BCom Hons (UNSW), Dip (FINSIA).  Andrew co-founded Platinum in 1994 as the Deputy Chief Investment Officer, having worked alongside Kerr for several years at Bankers Trust and perfecting the craft of uncovering the overlooked gems in the stock market. Like Kerr, Andrew believed that irrational market sentiments and the consequential short-term volatility can often lead to opportunity in companies whose true worth is temporarily under-appreciated. The approach worked for Andrew at Bankers Trust where the BT Select Market Trust – Pacific Basin Fund that he managed was a great success, and he has been applying and refining the same methodology over the past two decades to generate strong returns for Platinum’s investors.  Since taking over the role of Chief Investment Officer in 2013, Andrew has spent considerable time and effort on improving the organisational structure of the gradually-expanding investment team to make the execution of our investment process more seamless and efficient.  With full endorsement from the Board, Andrew took over the role of Chief Executive Officer of the Platinum Group from Kerr on 1 July 2018 and will lead the firm to write its next chapter.  Andrew handed over portfolio management responsibilities of the Platinum Asia Fund to Joseph Lai in late 2014, which he had managed since the fund’s inception in 2003. He took over the portfolios of Platinum Capital Limited (ASX code: PMC) and The Platinum Master Portfolio Ltd from Kerr on 1 July 2018, and co-manages with Clay Smolinski the flagship Platinum International Fund, the Platinum International Fund (Quoted Managed Hedge Fund), and the Platinum World Portfolios – International Fund.

Scott Gilchrist was an engineer by training. Before joining Platinum in 2001, he had held a range of consulting and operational roles in the engineering and mining industries, including undertaking project management responsibilities on several significant assignments.  Scott has lived and worked in numerous countries around the world, including England, Indonesia and Jamaica, among others, but the unique cultural and industrial landscapes of Japan have always had a special appeal for him.  Scott left Platinum in 2007 to pursue other interests before returning in 2010. He was an analyst covering the resources and industrial sectors before being appointed the portfolio manager of the Platinum Japan Fund and The Platinum Japan Master Portfolio in 2014. He has also been the portfolio manager of the Platinum World Portfolios – Japan Fund since its inception in 2015.

Nik Dvornak is our in-house economist. Before joining Platinum in 2006, Nik worked as an analyst at the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA), the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) and Commonwealth Securities.  He is also our go-to person on all questions concerning European history and geopolitics.  Nik was appointed a co-manager of the Platinum European Fund in 2014 before becoming the sole manager in early 2017. He continues to cover the financials/services sector.
